The geological and climatic history of Sierra Nevada, its geographic position and altitude make this mountain system a place of exceptional characteristics, and a biology of great richness and diversity.
Animals and plants cohabit here despite having their origins in zones as different as northern Europe, northern Africa and even Asia.
The harshness of the conditions in the High Peaks has caused the living creatures of this area to develop survival strategies which in many cases have led to the formation of unique species. This process is more evident among the insects (more than 200 endemic species), or flora (80 endemic plants in Sierra Nevada).
